RUNCAP: BK HALF

LAST SATURDAY MARKED EXACTLY 4 YEARS SINCE I RAN THE BROOKLYN HALF FOR THE FIRST TIME, JUST 3 SHORT DAYS BEFORE GRADUATING COLLEGE. I REMEMBER HOW EXCITED I WAS BECAUSE I HAD FINISHED ALL OF MY PROJECTS, GONE TO THE LAST OF MY CLASSES AND ALL THAT WAS LEFT TO DO WAS RUN. EVEN THOUGH THE WEATHER WASN'T IDEAL, I REMEMBER SMILING THE ENTIRE TIME AND SOAKING IN ALL THE FUN AT THE FINISH LINE IN CONEY ISLAND. I KNEW I'D RUN IT AGAIN SOMEDAY.

FLASH FORWARD A FEW YEARS, AND I'M BACK IN NY. I WAS EXCITED TO JUST HAVE FUN AND SOAK IN MY FAVORITE PLACE OVER THE COURSE OF 13 MILES. PLUS, MY BEST FRIEND AMBER WAS RUNNING IT AS HER FIRST HALF (SHE TOTALLY CRUSHED IT). IT WAS NICE TO TRAVEL TO THE START OF THE RACE TOGETHER EVEN IF OUR CABBIE WAS CRAZY AND ULTIMATELY SEND HER OFF FOR HER FIRST BIG RACE.

I FINISHED IN 1:50:37, ROUGHLY 8:25 PER MILE. IT WASN'T MY FASTEST, BUT IT WAS A COURSE PR AND ANYTIME I FINISH I'M GRATEFUL. COMING OFF OF THE NEW JERSEY MARATHON, I KNEW I'D FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE MILEAGE, I JUST WANTED TO SEE HOW FAST I COULD PUSH MYSELF. I FORGOT HOW HILLY PROSPECT PARK IS, AND MY MENTAL STRENGTH DRIFTED TOWARDS THE LAST COUPLE MILES. BUT I PUSHED ON AND SMILED ALL THE WAY THROUGH FINISH. AFTER I FINISHED, I MANAGED TO RUN BACK TO MILE 12 TO MEET UP WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO CHEER ON AMBER AS SHE FINISHED HER RACE. I WAS SO PROUD TO SEE HER CRUSHING IT AS SHE RAN BY.

RACE HIGHLIGHTS: THE GIGANTIC GREAT DANE I CONTEMPLATED STEALING IN PROSPECT PARK, RUNNING THROUGH A CONFETTI CLOUD AT MILE 12 (THANKS TO NYC RUNNING CREW), CHEERING ON MY BESTIE AT THE END OF HER RACE AND THE ENDLESS CHAMPAGNE BRUNCH WE ENJOYED POST RACE.

PER USUAL, I WAS THANKFUL FOR FRIENDS THAT ARE FAMILY WHO CAME OUT TO SUPPORT. SPECIAL SHOUT OUT TO MY MAN WHO CONTINUOUSLY CHASES ME AROUND AT EVERY RACE AND KEEPS COMING BACK FOR MORE.
