SAVANNAH

LAST SUMMER THE MAN-FRIEND AND I ROAD TRIPPED TO SAVANNAH, GEORGIA. DESPITE THE BLISTERING AUGUST HEAT, IT REMAINS ONE OF MY FAVORITE GETAWAYS TO DATE. ENORMOUS OAK TREES DRAPED IN SPANISH MOSS FRAME THE STREETS AND NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO, YOU ARE LIKELY STANDING ON HALLOWED GROUND. THERE ARE OVER TWENTY TOWN SQUARES THAT HAVE THE UNMISTAKABLE CHARM OF CENTRAL PARK BUT THE QUAINTNESS OF A PRIVATE GARDEN. WE STAYED AT THE MANSION ON FORSYTH PARK, A UBER CHIC HIDEAWAY A FEW BLOCKS FROM THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN SAVANNAH. BURIED INSIDE THIS VICTORIAN ROMANESQUE MANSION, THOUSANDS OF ART PORTRAITS HANG AND THE MOST GENUINE SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY IS EXTENDED. A PORTION OF THE HOTEL RESIDES IN AN OLD FUNERAL HOME WHICH WAS RENOVATED AND BUILT ONTO SEVERAL YEARS AGO. IT’S EVER SO FITTING SINCE SAVANNAH IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE MOST HAUNTED CITIES IN THE US. WE HAD OUR FAIR SHARE OF GHOULISH ODDITIES WHILE THERE, SOME WE STILL TALK ABOUT TO THIS DAY. THE BEST PART OF OUR STAY (ASIDE FROM PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING) WAS THE 3 PM DAILY COOKIE DISPLAY IN THE LOBBY. EACH DAY A DIFFERENT FLAVOR WAS FRESH BAKED FOR HOTEL GUESTS. OF COURSE WE STOPPED EVERY TIME. OF COURSE THEY WERE BY FAR THE MOST SINFUL COOKIES EVER. AND JUST IN CASE THE SALTY-SWEET-CHEWY-GOOEY-CHOCOLATE MADE YOU PARCHED, WELL, THERE WAS A PITCHER OF ICE COLD PEACH TEA RIGHT BESIDE THEM TO QUENCH THAT THIRST. YOU BET WE WENT BACK FOR SECONDS (AND THIRDS).

MOST PEOPLE EAT TO LIVE. I MOST DEFINITELY LIVE TO EAT AS I’M SURE YOU COULD GUESS BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF COOKIES I WENT BACK FOR. AND IN SAVANNAH, I SURE DID FEAST. WE DINED AT VARIOUS STYLE EATERIES AND BACK END PUBS, BUT THE OLDE PINK HOUSE TOOK THE WIN FOR BEST MEAL OF THE TRIP. MY SPREAD WAS FULLY EQUIPPED WITH A JALAPENO MARGARITA, SOME OF THE BEST SPICY COLLARD GREENS IN TOWN AND THE MOST SUCCULENT PECAN CRUSTED CHICKEN. WE ATE OUR MEAL TUCKED AWAY IN ONE OF THE NINE INTIMATE DINING ROOMS THAT MADE YOU FEEL INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. THE FOODS QUALITY MIRRORED THE SERVICE, BOTH UTTERLY REMARKABLE. ANOTHER MEAL FOR THE BOOKS WAS AT THE PUBLIC KITCHEN AND BAR. DAVE AND I CRUSHED EQUALLY ON BOTH OUR WAITRESS AND MEAL. WE ORDER BACON CHEESEBURGERS, HIS WITH A SIDE OF SWEET POTATO FRIES AND MINE ACCOMPANIED BY A FRESH FETA QUINOA SALAD. AND BEING THE (SELF-PROCLAIMED) BURGER CONNOISSEURS WE ARE, OUR EXPECTATIONS WERE HIGH. AS SOON AS I SPOTTED THE PRETZEL BUN (THE BEST KIND OF BUN ASIDE FROM MARTIN’S POTATO BUNS) I KNEW IT’D BE LOVE AT FIRST BITE. AND IT WAS. A COOL CRISP CRAFT BEER WASHED IT DOWN FLAWLESSLY. SO FAR, NO BURGER HAS SURPASSED THE PUBLIC KITCHEN'S PERFECTLY JUICY BACON BURGER.

AFTER DEMOLISHING OUR DINNER AT PUBLIC, WE PAYED HOMAGE TO THE ONE AND ONLY FOREST GUMP BY VISITING CHIPPEWA SQUARE. REMEMBER THE TWENTY PLUS TOWN SQUARES I MENTIONED BEFORE? THE NOTORIOUS BUS STOP WHERE TOM HANKS SITS FOR THE DURATION OF THE FILM, RESIDES IN CHIPPEWA SQUARE (WELL USED TO). THE BENCH IS NO LONGER THERE DUE TO SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO STEAL IT. HOWEVER, THE TOWN SQUARE REMAINS A SIGHT TO BE SEEN THANKS TO THE STATUE OF JAMES OGLETHORPE (FOUNDER OF THE GEORGIA COLONY) WHICH PRESIDES OVER THE PARK.

WE DID DO OTHER THINGS ASIDE FROM EATING; WE SHOPPED (SHOCKING, I KNOW) I SCORED A FEW CURIOUS FINDS IN ADDITION TO THE MEMORIES DAVE AND I BROUGHT HOME. FIRST, WE FELL UPON THE PARIS MARKET. THE DIFFERENT ANTIQUES AND QUIRKY KNICK NACKS THAT FILL THE SHELVES ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND UNLESS YOU TRAVEL THE WORLD. AT THE PARIS MARKET, CULTURAL NOVELTIES COME TOGETHER IN ONE RUSTICALLY LOVABLE STORE. BLISSFUL FACES GREET YOU UPON ARRIVAL AND YOU CAN EVEN SNACK ON FRENCH MACARONS AS YOU SIFT THROUGH THE SHOPS ARTIFACTS.  I TOOK HOME A PAIR OF TAILOR SCISSORS, HAND CRAFTED IN INDIA, WITH BRONZE HANDLES AND SILVER CUTTING BLADES. ASK ANY FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND, THEY’LL TELL YOU THE SCISSORS WERE NOT THE ONLY THING TO COME BACK WITH ME. (IT IS SAID SPIRITS AND ENERGIES ROAM SAVANNAH DUE TO THE CITIES HAUNTED HISTORY- APPARENTLY THOSE SPIRITS LATCH ONTO TANGIBLE OBJECTS OR PEOPLE- LET’S JUST SAY WE THINK SOMETHING’S FASTENED ONTO THOSE SCISSORS OTHER THAN THE SCREW THAT KEEPS THE BLADES TOGETHER- BUT THAT’S A WHOLE OTHER STORY) MY OTHER LUCKY DISCOVERY WAS AT SHOP SCAD. SHOP SCAD IS THE PLACE TO GO IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR FRESH AND INNOVATIVE DESIGN FINDS. IT IS THE STORE WHERE SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN STUDENTS, BOTH CURRENT AND ALUMNI, CAN SELL THEIR WORK. THERE, I FOUND A NECKLACE SO UNLIKE ANY OTHER. DANGLING FROM A SILVER CHAIN WAS A PENNY ENGRAVED WITH THE WORD LUCKY. IT COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE SUITABLE FOR ME, IT WAS MINE THE SECOND I SAW IT. I HOLD BOTH ITEMS EXTREMELY DEAR (EXCEPT THE SCISSORS, SOMETIMES I THINK MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARE RIGHT)

MY MOST FAVORITE THING ABOUT SAVANNAH IS THE OVERLY WELCOMING FEELING THAT RADIATES FROM EVERY CREVICE OF THE CITY. EVERYDAY WE’D MEET NATIVES WHO’D SHARE STORIES OF THE CITY UNABLE TO BE FOUND IN A BOOK. AND WITH EACH DAY WE SPENT EXPLORING, WE’D HEAR OF A LOCAL BAR TO SPEND OUR NIGHTS. AFTER WE’D HAD OUR OVERWHELMINGLY DELIGHTFUL SHARE OF PEACH SANGRIA'S AND HOMEGROWN CRAFT BEER, THE COOL NIGHTS’ BREEZE WOULD WALK US HOME.

WHETHER IT WAS GETTING LOST IN OUR MANSION OF A HOTEL, WALKING UNDER THE DANGLING SPANISH MOSS FROM THE VAST OAK TREES, OR COMPLETING A MORNING RUN AS THE SUN RAISED ABOVE RIVER STREET, I NEVER STOPPED SMILING. THIS CITY BROUGHT ME SUCH JOY, EXCITEMENT, MYSTERY, CULTURE, FOOD AND STORIES- I AM ITCHING TO GO BACK.
